Reflection Essay
The Three Great Lessons I Learned in COM 2206
Introduction
This essay focuses on three main lessons I learnt from the course on Interpersonal
communication (COM 2206). The essay shall be focused on topics and ideas underlying the
three writing assignment tasks assigned and what they demonstrated and imparted as a learning
material.
Information Handling
The first writing assignment assigned concerned the handling of information as it is received
from various sources. A scenario was given revolving around two children doing a mischief and
telling their own perspectives and it was required to identify the process to be followed with two
of the children’s perspectives to determine which of the perspectives or stories were true or
whether something else happened entirely. It was required to define each step clearly and
thoroughly, including the sub-concepts such as factors, constructs and narratives. Four stages of
information handling were discussed as follows:
Selection: In this stage, the factors which lead me to notice some messages and ignore
others were identified.
Organization: In this stage, organization of information into a meaningful order was
done.

Interpretation: In this stage, after organizing the perceptions from the second stage,
interpreting them in a meaningful way was done
Negotiation: In the final stage, the perceptions thorough communications were
communicated.
After applying these stages to the scenario, I learnt a lot about applying them in real life
situations I often face in my daily life while handling information from various sources which is
often contradictory. I also learnt about the various factors which influence the handling of
information and building perception which is very helpful in later work-life I shall be
undertaking.
Listening
The second assignment was much more interesting and engaging. It concerned the phenomenon
of listening. It apprised about the revised Listening Styles Profile (LSP-R) which measures
four constructs including relational listening, analytical listening, task listening and critical
listening. I first completed the Listening Styles Profile (LSP-R) and calculated my scores for
each of the four styles mentioned above. Then, I proceeded on to discuss the importance of
listening in interpersonal relationships, analyzing my results from the Revised Listening Styles
Profile and considering the barriers which affect my effectiveness as a listener and discussed
how I could overcome them. For this assignment, I made a thorough reading of the textbook and
analyzed all the concepts of effective listening as applied to communication in everyday
situations. Knowing my Revised Listening Style Profile was great and I recognized that I mostly
adopted a task-oriented or transactional listening style which is most suitable for
business/work/task oriented listening. I also had a pretty high score in relational listening which
