ASSIGNMENT 2
Nuclear Medicine is a relatively newer branch of medicine which aims at applying the
theories and concepts of radioactivity for a variety of clinical medical application like diagnosis,
imaging, and management of a variety of disorders and ailments. Nuclear medicine has also been
termed as a physiological imaging modality (Fakhri, 2017). Radioactivity is a physical
phenomenon which in the past has been used for destructive purposes like warfare and mass
destruction and constructive purposes like energy and electricity generation. It’s application to
medicine, as a constructive use enabled the physicians to reach those parts of the body which were
otherwise considered inaccessible.
To examine the scope and application of radioactivity to medicine, it is important to
understand the scientific and technical concepts which relate to nuclear medicine. The aim of this
paper is therefore to analyze the various aspects of application of radioactivity to nuclear medicine.
First of all, it is important to understand the type(s) of radiation which gets exploited in
most of the nuclear medicine procedures. To understand it, the major forms of radiations emitted
by radioactive substances are needed to be known. There are three such types of radiations; alpha
rays, beta rays, and the gamma rays. Amongst the three, it is the gamma radiation which finds its
application into nuclear medicine, and this is because of the wavelength, frequency, and energy
content of the gamma radiations which make them suitable for their use in medical diagnostics and
therapeutics.
Patients are prepared to undergo diagnoses and treatments requiring the use of radiation in
a manner which ensures the safety of both the administrator of the radioactive source and that of
the patient. Patients usually undergo baseline testing before they are administered a radioactive
substance. If the patients are found to have the minimum parameters required for administration
