There have been some new developments in the scenario regarding child health and
medical negligence in the socioeconomic setup of Pakistan.
Medical negligence is widespread in Pakistan, and children with serious diseases and
grave complications of such diseases are often subjected to medical negligence while seeking
healthcare in Pakistan.
There are a number of factors which hinder the provision of timely and efficient
healthcare to children having various illnesses in Pakistan. These include the following:
Strikes by Healthcare Staff
Strikes by healthcare staff like doctors, nurses and paramedics are commonplace in
Pakistan due to a number of reasons. These include:
i. Low salaries/ absence of service structure.
ii. Long working hours and lack of incentive-based practice.
iii. Security issues for medical staff leading to violence against healthcare staff and
consequent strike of medical staff after violent episodes.
iv. Politicization and unionization amongst doctors and allied medical staff.

Due to the above mentioned factors, a lot of strikes by healthcare providers take place in
Pakistan which disrupt the provision of timely care to the patients leading to death and disability.
Medical Negligence
With weak regulation of the public and private healthcare settings, medical negligence is
quite prevalent in Pakistan. As a result loss of precious lives takes place. Children equally face
the burden of medical negligence as do the adults. Recently there has been a rise in cases of
medical negligence in Pakistan. Negligence can be attributed to a number of reasons which
include lack of clinical skill and acumen, insufficient training, quackery, unavailability of
electro-medical equipment and essential drugs, improper healthcare facility infrastructure and
very high patient load on healthcare facilities not allowing for proper time allocation for each
patient.
Some of the cases reported recently include the following:
Pakistan police arrest doctor blamed for spreading HIV
A doctor has been arrested in Pakistan on charges of spreading HIV amongst patients.
Police say that the accused Dr. Muzaffar Ghanghar, who himself is an HIV patient, is employed
at a public hospital in Ratodero district of Larkana ("Pakistan police arrest doctor blamed for
spreading HIV", 2019).
