Reliability of Examination Results
Tasks
1. The term reliability, as it applies to assessments and examination is
an educational context is defined as follows:
“Reliability of the examination results is defined as an attribute of the
examination results which refers to the reproducibility of the results
over person, time and person. This implies that if the assessment or
examination is replicated over time, place and person, they yield
the same results or similar results (with a small deviation)”
Reliability, as defined above, is therefore a measure of the validity of
an assessment or examination. Reliability in examination results is
critical for medical students [1].
2. In the scenario where it has to be demonstrated that high level of
reliability is ensured in the examination results, the type of reliability
which shall be measured is termed as the “Classical Test Theory”
abbreviated as the CTT. It is also referred to as the Classical
Measurement Theory (CMT).
The formula which shall be used for measuring the reliability of
examination results is as the Spearman-Brown formula [2]:
r
kk
= k(r
11
) / [1 + (k 1)* r
11
]
Where:
r
kk
= reliability of a test “k” times as long as the original test,
r
11
= reliability of the original test
k = factor by which the length of the test is changed.
The software which shall be used to calculate the Reliability is
Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) software.
3. If hired, in order to improve the reliability, I shall classify the steps to
be taken as follows:
