Quantitative Research Design and Approaches: Process of Qualitative Data Analysis and
Interpretation
The paper presents a qualitative approach to research in nursing. The paper also presents
qualitative research designs by outlining and describing them, and by differentiating between the
various designs. The paper presents an introduction to qualitative research, describes the
philosophical view of qualitative research and describes the various approaches to qualitative
research including phenomenological research, grounded theory research, ethnography research,
case study research, and historical research.
1. Introduction
To understand qualitative research, it is important to understand the concept of research
and scientific inquiry and its application to the process of nursing. Research is defined as the
process of systematically investigating various phenomena with the intent of establishing the
facts and evidence for such facts. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to create and generate
new knowledge and to validate the existing knowledge.
The term research is often used synonymously with systematic inquiry (Polit & Beck,
2017). It is so because research is a method of systematic investigation to establish facts and
testify the existing facts. Research is a very important component of the discipline of nursing.
Since the practice and discipline of nursing are purely scientific, to create knowledge, it depends
on a process of systematic investigation. Research furnishes the knowledge as well as the
foundation of evidence-based nursing practices, which form the core of the professional practice
(Yates, 2015).
