Qualitative Research Proposal
Looking at the slides and the instructions document, discuss and answer the
following questions. You should all produce your proposal independently
and I expect your answers to be different. However, you may find it useful
to discuss with others to get ideas during the planning stage.
For each question, create a mind-map, spider diagram, list or set of bullet-
points so you can start planning out your brief.
1. The theme/topic of this research proposal is wellbeing in the workplace – which
workplace are you going to use for your proposal? Be specific about the context.
2. Think about the points you will cover in your introductory literature review relating
to wellbeing and your workplace. You can use the literature provided to help you
(hopefully you’ll have read some of this by now – or look it up on Moodle now and
discuss it with others).
3. You have to have one main research question and at least one secondary question.
Decide on your research questions, remembering that they have to be phrased in a
way suitable for qualitative research.
4. Think about your sample – how many participants do you want to include? What are
your inclusion and exclusion criteria?
5. How will you recruit your participants? Are there any issues related to recruitment?
6. What will your rationale be for using qualitative research? What can a qualitative
methodology offer?
7. Methodological background – define your methodology using the Braun & Clarke
(2006) article.
8. Think about your interview schedule (topic guide). You will need to outline the
topics you will include and give a few example questions. Try phrasing a couple of
interview questions and creating some prompts or probes to go alongside these
questions.
9. Ethics – discuss some of the key issues that you want to include in your proposal
regarding ethics.
10. Reflexivity – start thinking about the type of comments you want to include in this
section.
11. Have a think what title you will use for your proposal, remembering all the different
elements you need to include.
