If asked if I am a fan of horror movies, my answer shall be yes, but I would like to add that I was
more so in my childhood and early adolescence than I am now. What attracted me towards
horror is the thrill and excitement on gets when watching a horror movie to be exact. In my
opinion, being a fan of the horror films and that of horror itself are two different things. Horror
itself can come from a lot of sources like real life experiences and the horror obtained from
watching a horror movie is just one part of the broad horror spectrum. Coming back to my point,
what attracted me towards horror movies seems to have little to do with the content of the movie
it-self but the environment, settings and mind-set with which I used to watch horror movies in
mu child hood was what attracted me towards the horror movies. I had feelings like I want to
watch the film but at the same time I was feeling dead terrified and trembling with fear; a fear of
the unknown.
Considering my response in the light of King’s statement that “We also go to horror (films) to re-
establish our feelings of essential normality, I think my response is quite in line with it. It is quite
normal in childhood to seek thrill and it is pretty normal for children to find any source to get
this thrill, be it watching horror or even exercising horror in real life. I would say in the present
day, the only motive I have in watching a horror movie is that I remember and cherish the days
of my child-hood when I used to thoroughly enjoy watching horror movies a lot. It is with this
spirit and nostalgia that I turn back to watch horror movies even today. This establishes my sense
of normality that I enjoy horror movies even today as they satisfy my need to re-establish my
childhood thoughts regarding horror, even though the threshold for fear in my life has changed
significantly from the childhood.
The psychological aspects of horror and the response of different individuals to horror in the
light of psychological aspects are very well-described in the writing and I totally agree with it.
