qualities to express his thoughts and feelings articulately. Barrister has written several articles on
addressing social and political issues; that have been published in leading newspapers of
Pakistan.
Philanthropy
Barrister Abid Waheed Sheikh is an active member of Islamabad Chamber of Commerce &
Industry. He has been an important figure in outlining business and economic development plans
of Pakistan.
Barrister Abid Waheed is known as a Social and Political Worker who has also carried out the
numerous relief activities throughout Pakistan. He played a key role in uplifting of the Pakistan
Sweet Home Project. He has also been looking after 100 orphan children of this project, since
2010.
In 2015, he initiated a project to look after the elderly people and established a shelter Homes
for Old Age People in Islamabad and Karachi.
Currently, he is serving as Managing Director of an apex Social Safety Net of the country,
Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (http://pbm.gov.pk/). He took this responsibility in November, 2013 with
the ambition to make this organization a forward looking, efficient, modern and vibrant to

Pakistan. Mr. Sheikh has constituted a number of standards and kick started groundbreaking
projects which have brought the organization in limelight.
Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal (PBM), is an autonomous body set up through The Pakistan Bait-ul-
Mal ACT 1991. PBM is significantly contributing toward poverty alleviation through its
various poorest of the poor focused services and providing assistance to destitute, widow,
orphan, invalid, infirm and other needy persons, as per eligibly criteria approved by Bait-ul-Mal

into place a number of policies and made some important reforms to improve the negative
perception of state-managed services. Most importantly, he has developed a system of
immaculate scrutiny to identify and correct the irregularities in the management of the Sweet
Homes.
The child support program is an effort to alleviate poverty and illiteracy in Pakistan by
disbursing cash benefits to the underprivileged families with young children. Abid Sheikh has
been of the opinion that one of the leading reasons why the literacy rate is low is because
families would rather have their children engage in child labor than go for education. He is well
aware of the fact that the priority in the poverty-stricken households is to put food on the table
rather than acquiring education.
Similarly, the organization also runs an Individual Financial Assistance program. This
program is aimed at alleviating poverty and helping certain segments of our society to maintain a
decent standard of living. Since the nature of this program is highly sensitive and opportunities
for embezzlement are numerous, the MD has placed strict measures in place to ensure that there
is no embezzlement of funds or unethical behavior which could possibly tarnish the image of the
organization.
Apart from working for poverty alleviation, the organization has also taken up other social
causes as well. One of those is the women empowerment initiative. The organization has
established vocational training institutions so that women could utilize those skills to earn money
and thus earn a living for their family. The scheme has been particularly effective and many have
praised it for transforming the lives of numerous widows.
Recently, a State of the Art Thalassemia Center has been established for free of cost treatment
by Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal in F-9 Park, Islamabad in financial collaboration with NOVARTIS
(PVT) LIMITED.
A lot more similar projects are in the pipeline. The organization, under the leadership of its
current MD, is also looking to establish a kidney center to serve the less-privileged class. The
facility will fill in a major gap in availability of health care services and facilities for the less-
privileged ones.

Criticism
Abid’s appointment as the managing director has been criticized by many. They argue that
his appointment was simply a way to reward his loyalty to the ruling party. Many claim that such
decisions weaken the government’s image and shake the public’s confidence.
Also, the critics are wary of the over-active publicity machinery. They believe that there is not
much to show for all the hype that is being generated. They are of the opinion that the
organization’s performance is mediocre as usual; the only difference now is that the person
spearheading the organization is much more media savvy than his predecessors.
Performance as the Managing Director
However, Abid Waheed Sheikh has exceeded all expectations. He is well aware of the sensitive
nature of his post. Hence, he has implemented a comprehensive and a transparent system of
checks-and-balances that ensures a clean record. He is well aware of the fact that his post is a
sensitive one and always under scrutiny.
Barrister Sheikh has also been keen to develop alliances and synergies with other
organizations. In order to grow the profile of this organization, he regularly meets with
diplomatic staff, donor organizations, politicians and senior bureaucrats. As a barrister, Abid is a
refined professional who knows the art of deal-making which has helped his organization grow
exponentially His firmly believes that that an organization is a reflection of its leader.
