Behavioral issues are pretty common in pre-school students of an elementary school
in Baltimore, as identified by the manifestation of bizarre behavior by many of the
low-income students in the said school. The Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) throws
light on the development of such behavioral issues and guides us in the identification
and for the rectification of the same. It is a dynamic interplay between the three
constructs namely personal factors, environmental influences and behaviors, all three
of them influencing and modifying each other. We shall now examine how the three
constructs of SCT play a role in the development of these behavioral issues in the
school:
Personal Factors:
Personal factors include the cognitive, affective and biological events which shape the
behaviors of the children. These attributes including thinking patterns, personality
traits and biological predisposition to the development of personality or psychiatric
disorders lead to the development of peculiar behaviors in the children as has been
observed by the teachers.
Environmental influences:
The environmental influences including low socioeconomic status, deprivation,
competition and survival of the fittest also affect the behavior of these children along
with the influence of the behaviors of their peers and elders they are subjected to.
Behavior:
The factors described above have led to the development of specific behavioral
patterns in the at risk low income preschoolers. These abnormal behaviors lead to the
genesis of deranged environmental and personal factors (when they bear their children)
for others in the community leading to propagation of the same.
Strategy to be used by teachers to address the behavioral issues:
The teachers will need to identify the specific personal (knowledge and attitudes) and
environmental influences to begin with addressing the negative behaviors and then
planning out rectification of these influences to result in positive and acceptable
behaviors.
