From the first day I entered my educational life, a question revolved in

my mind. The question was what I would do when I grow up. The question

took several answers as I grew up till time I was around 10 years of age

when I first developed a passion to become a healer. From that day onwards,

my passion became my obsession, as in our country, getting into a medical

school is something for which you have to devote yourself to. I kept

studying hard till I passed my pre-medicine class with flying colors and

based on my academic credentials, I was accepted into Rawalpindi Medical

College, the most prestigious medical school in my city.

With a sense of accomplishment, I entered the medical school with a passion

to acquire medical knowledge. To me, the study of human anatomy and

physiology was a fascinating experience, something I felt I was made for.

Progressing through the successive years of the school, my knowledge

transitioned from a study of basic medical sciences to the more fascinating

world of clinical sciences. From the third year of my medical degree onwards,

I started visiting the attached hospital, Benazir Bhutto Hospital, a large

quaternary care hospital attached to my college. It was there that I learnt

the art and science of medicine; taking a meaningful history from patients,

conducting general physical examinations, ordering and understanding the

rationale of ordering various diagnostic investigations, making

provisional diagnoses and ultimately testing them under the kind guidance

of my seniors. I also learnt a new dimension of medicine, the medical ethics.

This included the art of breaking bad news, offering effective counseling

to the patients, taking consent and keeping patient’s advantage over every

other consideration.

Time passed quite quickly till I graduated from the medical school and

completed my internship from the same hospital. Later on, fascinated by

the vast and wonderful field of internal medicine, I decided to join a

residency program in internal medicine after clearing the requisite

entrance examination with flying colors. Internal medicine was my career

aspiration from day one of joining the medical school and it came true.

It also became my choice in the later clinical years of my medial school

when I started developing interest in the medical ward duties. During my

residency in Pakistan, I worked quite hard to learn about the practice

and application of scientific knowledge of internal medicine to make

diagnoses and achieve considerable results by instituting treatments

under my supervisor’s guidance.

My quest didn’t stop there. During my residency, I started studying for

USMLE as I envisaged that the best possible training in internal medicine

is possible exclusively at USA. With this thought in mind, I studied hard

and got excellent scores in USMLE steps. Thereafter, I shifted to USA,

to do my clinical observership and some medical research. What I gained

during all these endeavors was an understanding of the United States

healthcare system and a firsthand knowledge about the electronic medical
