Introduction
Individuals vary a lot in their career aspirations. For some, it means growing their
professional network while for others; it may be improving their training and
development. Efforts once defined and focused lead to achievement. However,
amongst these career aspirations, what is important is to strike a fair balance. It is very
important to have a work-life balance as well. Keeping this balance in mind, one should
make his or hers goals and objectives in line with the theory of work-life balance.
There are a lot of researchers who have worked in the domain of career development.
However, the names of Roe, Super and Holland need a special mention. They all had
their distinct theories on determination of their career paths by people. Super’s theory
was based on a developmental framework. On the other hand, Roe and Holland held
their theories on need and personality basis. However one thing common in these
theories was that all three of them defined some determinants which shaped the career
aspirations of individuals. Once the theories were evolved, a number of studies on
career aspirations were undertaken to explore the formation of career aspirations, how
and when they develop, factors influencing them, and their sustainability and stability
over a period of time. Expectations of parents play a pivotal role in shaping the career
goals of a child/ adolescent. Learning disabilities in children also play a vital role in this
regard.
Important Career Theorists
Donald Super:
His theory of development of career was centered upon a developmental framework.
He initiated a study on nearly 100 men in 1951 when they were 14-15 years old till they
got 36 years old. It was a longitudinal career pattern study (abbreviated as CPS). The
goal of the study was to seek the course of development that young people followed in
achieving their career goals. He demarcated the various stages through which people
progressed during their career cycle namely, the growth exploration stage,
