PROPOSAL FOR CHANGE at Cardiac Step down Unit, Memorial
University Medical Center, Savannah Georgia.
ABSTRACT
In this paper, I have designed a proposed change for the cardiac step down unit if the
Memorial University Medical Center, Savannah Georgia. I identified a need of the
said unit that is boosting of morale of the staff nurses employed in the said unit of the
hospital which needed a change in the real sense of the word. I devised a goal for the
said change and then proposed the objectives associated with meeting the decided
goal. I also suggested the steps to be undertaken with reference to each of the
objective so devised.
This change project is relatively low cost as it mostly employs the available resources
and is mostly concerned with the way resources are managed to achieve the desired
goal.
BRIEF HISTORY SURROUNDING THE NEED
The Cardiac Step down Unit is meant for patients requiring monitoring for a known
pre-existing condition related to cardiology e.g. their angioplasty has been done or their
coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) has been done or they have a recently
diagnosed condition of the heart or an arrhythmia. The unit is also for the patients to
accommodate them for the first phase of their rehabilitation. Before getting discharged
from this unit, nurses on duty in the unit educate the patients about their disease, their
drugs and their side effects and about the lifestyle they need to adopt. As such, this is
the patients’ last place of the hospital before they go back home after availing cardiac
services in the hospital and in fact their last impression of the hospital. As discussed,
the unit has an important role for the patients and poses a good deal of responsibility on
the shoulder of the nurses in the efficient discharge of their duties. Keeping in view the
specific requirements mentioned above, nursing staff needs to have a good deal of
morale in order to do their job in the best possible way. A lot of counseling and that too
with a, lot of patience needs to be done by the nurses. This requires a good degree of
morale on their part so that they are satisfied with their jobs and can continue providing
the best of their services. A morale boost is definitely an area of need and improvement
in case of the Cardiac step down unit of Memorial University Medical Centre,
Savannah, Georgia.
PROPOSED PLAN OF CHANGE
Keeping the need in mind, I will lay down the goal, objectives and propose the steps
to be taken to achieve these goals and objective. This shall comprise the entire plan of
