Summary

Cleft lip and palate, also known as oral cleft is one of most prevelant oro -

facial deformities. it includes cleft lip, cleft palate and both together.

Children suffering from these birth defects face a lot of problems and

challenges in their life including discrimination and prejudice.

An environment and complex multi faceted genetic etiology is involved in

oral clefts .Number of factors determining risk of cleft lip and palate

include malformation present in family, race and sex of affected

individuals, history of consaguinous marriage and delayed first conception

Typically, children with these disorders need multidisciplinarycare from

birth to childhood which include primary surgical repair, hearing

assessment, speech therapy and psychological support.

There is lack of proper knowledge of factors predisposing to cleft lip and

palate in children in developing countries; therefore we plan this study with

aim to determine the predisposing factors for cleft lip and palate in

children, their association with other congenital malformations and presence

of other associated risk factors in these patients.

The present case control study will be conducted at out patient and indoor

department of paediatric surgery and plastic surgery department of children

hospital Lahore by taking sample size of 110 (55 cases and 55 control).The

participants will be interviewed using a structured performa after informed

consent.The data will be entered on SPSS version 20 and analyzed

accordingly.
