HLTH 5318 Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) Prevention Lab: Hearing Protection Fit Testing Experiment
Name of the Student:…………………………………………………………
In this exercise, we will first simulate loud noises produced in workplaces in agricultural communities
by various noisy equipment. We will pretend that each of us is an agricultural worker. Our goal is to
find out the most appropriate hearing protection (e.g. earplugs) for each of the agricultural workers
working in a small farm through the fit testing experiment.
Each group will test TWO different types of hearing protection devices (HPDs) (e.g., earplugs) to
determine the PAR, which is the “personal attenuation rating” for a given hearing protector.
PAR can be used to estimate the noise attenuation achieved by the individual for whom it has been
measured. We will use 3MTM E-A-RfitTM Dual-Ear Validation System for testing the hearing
protection devices and compare the PAR for THREE HPDs.
