Write a 200- to 300-word response defining what intermediate sanctions are, their purpose in the
criminal justice process, and their function as a sentencing alternative. Then, answer this
question: Do you feel intermediate sanctions are an appropriate punishment? Explain your
rationale.
Intermediate sanctions are sanctions that are less restrictive than imprisonment and more
restrictive than probation. The purpose of these types of sanctions is to relieve pressure on over-
crowded prisons. Some of the sanctions are working for the community, paying fines, and
restitution among other things. These sanctions do help the community and the state financially
by saving money. Their function as a sentencing alternative is to give other forms of punishments
to offenders who would otherwise go to prison.
I believe that sanctions are an appropriate punishment in some cases, such as first time offenders,
and minors. I understand how these types of sanctions prevent more over-crowding in prisons and
allow for more lenient sentences, but we have one of the worse crime rates in the world for a
reason. These sanctions should not be applicable for second time offenders and for certain crimes
committed. The law needs to have more of a backbone on sentencing and have a more, “do the
crime, serve the time!” approach. Certain crimes and second time offenders should never be
allowed any type of sanctions regarding their sentences. These offenders should have to serve the
sentences set before them.
