Assignment 2
Anthropometry is the measurement of physical characteristics of the body, such as height, weight, and body
proportions. This was discussed at length in quarter 5 Basic Nutrition. While we have a general
understanding of what they are, and when to use them... why is the more important question. These
measurements are valuable in assessing and managing the obese individual. However, although
anthropometry is a useful tool to identify obesity and to monitor changes, it is only a small piece of a
successful weight loss program. The assigned reading "Fat: an evolving issue" examines the complex factors
contributing to obesity and suggests several important areas to examine. This can be used to answer question
3.
There is evidence that obesity is associated with many health risks such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease,
hypertension, hyperlipidemia, stroke and death. All of these risk factors should be assessed when evaluating
an obese client. Inflammation may be the common thread that connects many of these conditions. The
paper, "Inflammation as a link between obesity, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes" summarizes the
correlation between visceral adiposity, inflammation, and chronic disease. This can be used to answer
question 1.
