Abstract
Diabetes is a profound and widespread chronic disease that affects millions of Americans
and people across the globe. As with many other chronic diseases, diabetes relies heavily on
proper self-care techniques to reduce the likelihood and/or severity of the many complications
that can arise. This paper seeks to examine how the theoretical framework of the Theory of Self-
Care of Chronic Illness can be used to evaluate and improve self-care behaviors in adult
diabetics with special regard to the most common determinants of self-care behaviors and the
effects of illness perception and acceptance on self-care. A description of the Theory of Self-
Care of Chronic Illness, brief summary of the current literature, and specific applications to
practice are provided. Lastly, limitations and recommendations for further research are
identified.
Keywords: self-care, diabetes, theory of self-care of chronic illness,
