In this assignment, you are required to read the scenario below and answer all ten (10)
questions that follow.

Scenario
Scenario Russell Smart
Russell Smart is 88 years old male was admitted to the Accident and Emergency
department of local hospital with breathing difficulty.
Patient History:
Russell lived in a residential aged care facility since the age of 60, when his right leg was
amputated below the knee due to poor circulation (cardio-vascular disease - CVD), resulting
in gangrene in his right foot.
Russell smoked 50 cigarettes a day in the past even though he has been diagnosed with
emphysema for 15 years. Russell suffers from poor circulation to the left leg and has
gangrene to his left little toe. Russell requires oxygen most of the time due to his
breathlessness. Oxygen is delivered via nasal prongs.
Russell is vibrant and endearing to staff. He is empowered and good natured; he enjoys a
joke and is mates with Stan, another client at the facility. Russell has a brother who lives
close by and visits regularly. He also has a network of friends that regularly visit. He enjoys
playing cards with his friends and watching movies and reading. Russell regularly
participates in exercises to music and any other activity that occurs at the facility. Russell
has found it hard to give up smoking and will often ask his visitors for a cigarette, despite the
fact that he is continually short of breath and has a cough.

1. Explain the normal physiology of breathing as it occurs in a healthy body from when air
enters the nostrils until air is expelled from the nostrils. Explain in 200 words.
2. Outline the normal physiological changes to the respiratory system that occur as a result
of the ageing process? Outline in 100 words.
3. Outline how blood circulates throughout the healthy body.
Start with the blood entering the left atrium of the heart and completing a full cycle to return
back to the left atrium. Indicate when the blood is oxygenated or deoxygenated at different
stages. You need to include both cardio-pulmonary circulation as well as to the rest of the
body. Outline in 200 words.
4. Define, list and describe.
a) Define emphysema
b) List the main causes of emphysema
c) Describe how emphysema has affected Russell.
5. Given the fact that Russell has Cardio-vascular disease (CVD),
a) Explain what CVD is.
b) List the main lifestyle factors that contribute to CVD
c) Describe how these lifestyle factors have affected Russell’s normal body function.
6. After a visit to the doctor Russell’s blood pressure has been reported as hypertensive.
a) What is the range of normal blood pressure for an adult?
b) For people who are over 65 years of age, what range of blood pressure would be
considered to be hypertensive?
c) How would explain to Russell what the term hypertension means?
d) How would you explain to Russell what causes high blood pressure?
e) What are some of the signs and symptoms of high blood pressure?
7. Untreated hypertension leads to conditions such as Cerebral Vascular Accident (CVA)
a) In what body organ does a CVA occur?
b) How does a CVA occur?
c) What effect does hypertension have on other body systems?
8. Describe how you would promote a healthy lifestyle for Russell. Describe in 200 words.
9. Explain why good nutrition is important for older people. Explain in 200 words.
10. Why is it important that Russell is encouraged to maintain contact with Stan and his
brother? Support your answer using references. Explain in 200 words.
