HoloLens: Crime Scene Investigations through

Augmented Reality

Abstract

Due to the fact that crime scenes are very sensitive situations which require perfect methodical

collection and recovery of evidences, it is susceptible to damage such as by curious spectators,

careless handling of evidence leading to contamination or tampering of the scene and loss of

evidence, all of which nullifies the integrity of the evidence collected and the scene itself. In this

research I am going to use Augmented Reality using Microsoft HoloLens to capture the details

of crime scenes and reveal hidden part of the investigation. Microsoft HoloLens is a virtual

reality headset designed to provide the user with an augmented reality experience. HoloLens

used by first responders could be used to record the crime scene at its raw stage thereby resulting

in a perfect demonstration of the original state of the crime scene even after it had been

processed. This greatly enhances the integrity of the collected evidence and could also be used in

a courtroom to relay the scene of crime to the judge and jurors leading to a better rate of

prosecution.
