“In social cognitive theory, perceived self-efficacy results from diverse sources of
information conveyed vicariously and through social evaluation, as well as through direct
experience” (Bandura, 1977). When it comes to the influence society has on us as human being,
we often underestimate its contribution to our development of attitudes, abilities, and cognitive
skills that make up our self-system. This system plays an essential role in our self-efficacy which
according to Bandura, is our personal judgement of “how well one can execute courses of action
required to deal with prospective situations” (Bandura, 1977). The concept of self-efficacy is
important to psychologist Albert Bandura’s social cognitive theory, which emphasizes the role
society plays thru observational learning, social experience, and reciprocal determinism when it
comes to the development of a personality (Bandura, 1977). Human beings are complex
creatures with a wide range of mental processes; cognitive approach emphasizes the study of
mental processes related to acquisition, storage and the retrieval of knowledge. Human cognition
can be viewed as what we as humans learn, how we acquire knowledge, and how we construct
our self and the world around us; all this affects our perspective and how we react to certain
situations. This paper aims to analyze and discuss more about human cognition, including
psychologist Dorothy Dinnerstein’s seven features of human cognition which are: motivation,
flexibly focused, structured, layered, affectively tinged, self-reflective, and social. Along with
the seven features of cognition, three films (The Wild Child, The Pawnbroker, and Dr.
Strangelove) and three articles (“The Transformation of Man in Society”, “On Memory and
Childhood Amnesia”, and “Reflections: Prologue of Our Time”) will be integrated to the
discussion for a better understanding and examples of the seven features.
