CRITIQUE RESEARCH PAPER 2
Critique Research Paper: Quality of patient care in the critical care unit in relation to nurse
patient ratio: A descriptive study
Falk & Wallin (2016) in their study sought to explore the role of nurse-patient ratios on the
outcomes within critical care units. The retrospective study was based on critical care registry for
patients above the age of 15 years in selected seven critical care facilities. The aim…. And the
results revealed… The results of the study unplanned extubations as a marker for patient
outcomes related to nurse-patient ratio occurred at the rate of 3% to 5.7% of available cases.
Ventilation time was shortest in units with least patient numbers and with a specialist-
nurse/patient ratio of 0.5 to 0.6. Further, higher nurse/patient ratio was associated with longer
ICU length of stay. The critique of this article/study is essential in determining the applicability
of its findings within clinical care settings. A critique allows focused identification of gaps,
strengths and weaknesses of a study and therefore making a determination of its generalizability
and application. The purpose of this paper is to critique the research components such as the
Statement of the Problem, Hypothesis, the research question, Literature Review and the
Theoretical Framework.
Statement of the Problem
A statement of the problem (SOP) is a description of the issue being investigated or
addressed in a study. The SOP offers the context of the research while also setting out the
concepts that will be explored including the research questions that are to be answered and the
corresponding hypotheses (Clarke & Collier, 2015). The SOP in this study was……. The study
herein is based on the ideal that nurse-patient ratios have indicated to have a significant impact
on patient outcomes within clinical settings. Intensive care units or critical care units are
