Rural Populations & Healthy People 2020
People who live in rural areas often face different health issues as compared to people
who live in urban areas. Obtaining health care can be a problem when one lives in a remote area.
One might not be able to get to a hospital quickly if there is an emergency, or might not be able
to travel long distances to get routine checkups or screenings. Rural areas often have fewer
doctors or healthcare providers and, in some cases, specialists might not be available at all.
Because it can be hard to get care, health problems in rural residents may have become more
critical by the time they are actually diagnosed. People who live in rural areas in the United
States have a higher rate of chronic disease such as chronic kidney disease, respiratory disease,
heart disease, and strokes. They also have higher rates of certain types of cancer, due to exposure
