Rural Population and Healthy People 2020
Living in a small community has its advantages as well as its disadvantages. Knowing
everyone and being able to have supportive community is an important factor to help with full
recovery. Nursing is more than just taking care of patients in a hospital or clinical setting, it
consist of being on call all the time, it means caring in every situation. Rural nursing consists of
knowing every department and being familiar with unexpected situations.
Rural Nursing
Rural area can be defined as a community that has fewer than 2,500 residents living in an
area (Bushy, 2006). In means of numbers the geographical area that has fewer than ninety-nine
persons per square mile is a rural community. When it comes to our US population about
twenty-five percent live in rural areas (Bushy, 2006). Some advantages of living in a rural area
is that it is a small community and everyone usually knows every person in the community.
Community support is what is seen in rural areas, in other words the community help each other
in time of need. It can be financially to help out with house bills when someone can’t work or
emotionally just by visiting that person in the hospital. Other factors that is a disadvantage or
living in a rural area is having to drive usually thirty minutes or more to me able to be seen by a
specialist or requiring emergency care. Rural areas lack the means for emergency situations
requiring the physicians to transfer their patients to a bigger facility. Most rural area residents
live on farms and agriculture land, they rely on their farming for financial means for their family.
Rural nursing is a great advantage in the small community, these nurses work every department
not just one specifically. Community people tend to trust these nurses and rely on them not just
in the hospital setting but just when they see them as a community grocery store. The residents
