average Basic Metabolic Index (BMI) rates.
Health Inequity/Disparity
Allen county covers a large area, 657 square miles and is the 3
rd
largest county in Indiana
("InDepth Profile: STATS Indiana," n.d.). The population in 2018 was 375,351 ("InDepth
Profile: STATS Indiana," n.d.) with an adult obesity rate of 32 % ("Explore All Determinants in
Indiana," 2018). Of the 375, 351 residents, 12% are African American, 79.9% are Caucasian,
and 4.4% are Asian. 7.6% are Hispanic. School age children make up 18.7%, college age is 9%,
young adult is 26.2%, older adult is 24.5%, and seniors are 14.6% of the population ("InDepth
Profile: STATS Indiana," n.d.). Of those, 11% of adults and 5% of children remain uninsured.
11% of adults have diabetes and 47% of children qualify for free or reduce price lunches at
school ("Explore All Determinants in Indiana," 2018).
This shows that there is a gap in care here, where a portion of the population is uninsured
and have limited access to healthy foods and exercise opportunities. The median income of Allen
county is $52,661 ("InDepth Profile: STATS Indiana," n.d.) and 10% of the population have
limited access to healthy food. 15% of the population have food insecurity ("Rankings," n.d.). In
2019, 22% of adults have reported inactivity ("Explore All Determinants in Indiana," 2018).
This could be related to the fact that the major city in Allen County, Fort Wayne, has a low
walkability score 29/110 and a low transit score of 22/100 where the score is based on the time it
takes to travel to different destinations, such as fresh food (“Fort Wayne Parks and Recreation,"
n.d.). With many people needing cars to get around the area, there is disparity of being able to
