WRITTEN ASSIGNMENT 2
Working title-
Barriers that affect the work performance among employees diagnosed with Autism Spectrum
Disorder.
Purpose of this paper-
Employees with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) may exhibit several behaviors their
supervisors, coworkers, and others find challenging. At the same time, those employees with
ASD often see the world at large a challenge, and the behavior of other employees may be
confusing to them. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), About 1
in 59 individuals have been diagnosed with ASD (CDC, 2014). ASD is a developmental
disability that is shown to cause significant behavioral challenges and difficulties with social
communication (CDC, 2014). The paper is going to focus on barriers that affect work
performance among people who have ASD and the steps that can be taken to manage these
obstacles in employment. Also, it will propose a theoretical outline for managing work barriers.
Barriers Impacting Work Performance among ASD
ASD is associated with intellectual disabilities and emotional challenges. According to
research, the rate of employment among adults with ASD is only twenty-two percent, where
most people work at their homes. The society and the government have identified the need for
increasing the opportunities for people with ASD (Scott et al., 2019). However, it is not easy to
understand the programs that offer adaptive and social employment outcomes. Individuals with
Autism are sensitive to things that do not affect other people. For instance, some of them cannot
shake hands while others are afraid of fluorescent lights. On the other hand, they are unique in
which they have special interests that make them productive in specific jobs.
