Introduction
This assignment presents a critical evaluation of a case-control study using a Critical
Appraisal Skills program (CASP) critical appraisal tool for appraising case-control studies.
After summarising the research article and critically appraising it, the public-health and
health promotion implication of the research are presented in a format which is suitable for
the lay-audience.
Summary of the Research Article
The research by Yousef et al. (2013) is a case-control study exploring the protective role of
vitamin D in preventing the incidence of breast cancer. The authors hypothesized that the
female population of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia are at higher risk of having vitamin-D
deficiencies due to the dark skin tones and higher chances of being deficient in their
exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The investigation also emphasized that data in this regard
was deficient.
The aim of the study was to evaluate of association amongst the concentration of 25-
hydroxy-vitamin D in the blood circulation and the risk of development of breast cancerThe
investigators used a case-control design and recruited one hundred and twenty cases and
similar number of control for their study. The research population comprised of the patients
having admission to the King Fahd Hospital, Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The
instrument used for the research was a questionnaire regarding dietary habits and medical
histories of the patient in addition to the blood samples for measurement of 25-hydroxy-
vitamin D in the circulation.
The results of the study demonstrated the average age of the study subjects was 47.80
years and their body mass indices averaged 30. The active cases of women suffering from
