Assignment: Annotated Bibliography
Check to see the site is credible source: https://thinkchecksubmit.org/
Purpose:
Your research group chose a topic for your semester-long research project. This annotated
bibliography will help you learn about the topic as well as the method you will use for your
research.
This is an individual assignment.
Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent individual preparation for your group research
project. Collecting sources for a bibliography is useful, however, when you make annotations
about each source, you read each source critically, instead of just collecting information.
Annotated bibliographies allow you to see what has been done in the literature and where your
own research can fit. Writing an annotated bibliography helps you gain perspective on what is
being said about your topic and what we do not know very much about yet. By reading critically,
and responding to a variety of sources on a topic, you will see what the issues are and what
people are thinking about in that field.
Then you will be ready for the next step, helping your group refine the research question, and
develop your group research proposal (plan) for the research project.
Process:
A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has used
for researching a topic. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the
author, title, publisher, etc.).
Making an annotation employs critical thinking to create a summary and evaluation of the
material. Therefore, an annotated bibliography is a critically appraised summary and
evaluation of each of the sources.
An annotated bibliography provides specific information about each source you have used. As a
researcher, you become an expert on your topic. You have the ability to explain the content of
your sources, assess their usefulness, and share this information with others who may be less
familiar with them. Think of this assignment as part of a conversation with people interested in
the same things you are. The annotated bibliography allows you to tell readers what to check
out, what might be worth checking out in some situations, and what might not be worth spending
the time on. It is kind of like providing a list of good movies for your classmates to watch. Then
going over the list with them, telling them why this movie is better than that one or why one
student in your class might like a particular movie better than another student would. You want
to give your audience enough information to understand basically what the movies are about
and to make an informed decision about where to spend their money based on their interests.
How to write your annotated bibliography:
1) Write the current version of your group’s research question at the beginning of your
annotated bibliography and name the specific research method you plan to use. (Hint,
Qualitative and Quantitative are not methods)
2) Choose and review sources (books, articles, research papers, etc.) related to your
group’s researchable question. Article abstracts can be helpful in the initial screening

process, but you must read the whole article, or chapter for each source you include in
the assignment.
3) Identify three (3) sources that are relevant to your topic (question) or proposed method.
Three (3) bibliography entries from three different sources are required. Choose at least
one (1) for your topic and at least one (1) related to your method. The third can relate to
either your question or method, your choice.
For each source in your annotated bibliography, indicate before the notation, whether it is
related to the question or method.
4) For each of your three (3) sources, write the complete citation and the annotation using
APA format and the required indentation spaces.
5) Attach a hard copy of each article/chapter you use for your paper (all three sources) to
the printed copy of the assignment you hand in in class. They can be the copies you
worked from (with notes, highlighting etc.). You will get them back once your assignment
is graded.
6) Each annotation will have three paragraphs; Summary, Assessment, and Reflection.
Label each paragraph with the heading. Each source should first be summarized briefly,
followed by your critical assessment and your reflection, as described here:
Summary
Consider such things as: What are the main arguments? What is the point of this article?
What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article is about, what would you
say? What type of audience is the work written for?
Assessment
Evaluate such things as: What are its strengths and weaknesses? What is the quality of
this evidence? What makes the information reliable or not? What is the goal of this
source? Describe and verify the authority and qualifications of the author(s). What is the
relationship between the authors and the subject? Is there a possible conflict of interest?
(Many critical appraisal criteria and checklists exist in your textbook (p. 52, p. 402-403, p.
435-436) and online. These are great resources for this section).
Reflection
Explain how it fits into your research. How was this source helpful to you (or not)? How
will you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about
your topic? Do you think you might revise your question or methods based on this
source? Be specific in explaining how and why.
7) For each source, your three paragraphs taken together, will total no more than 300
words. These 300 words can be divided as necessary between the three sections
(Summary, Assessment and Reflection). No content over 300 words per source will be
considered in the marking.
(3 sources x 300 words = 900 words total, for the whole Annotated Bibliography.)
8) Your group’s research question, method, headings and bibliographic citations do not
count toward this word count.
9) Ensure there is no duplication of sources within your group. Although this is an individual
assignment, the knowledge you gain from each source will be shared with your group as
you pursue the research together.
