BEST PRACTICE THAT EMERGES 2
Best Practice that Emerges from the Critical Appraisal of Research
The best practice evident from the critical appraisal research is based on a systematic
process that identifies participants who have various characteristics that make them eligible to
participate in multiple studies. As a result, critical appraisal research was done to determine
whether adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and trauma have a direct influence on the
development of stress in children in various development stages of their growth. From the
critical appraisal research, one significant best practice that was evident is that ACE screening
can be used by nurses to determine various indications of abuse and trauma in young infants and
toddlers.
In all the four articles that were analyzed, one major characteristic that was evident was
that ACEs constitute a vital screening tool used when dealing with children as patients in
scenarios of abuse. According to Mckelvey et al., ACE screening tests have enabled researchers
to demonstrate an association between early childhood abuse and multiple cases of chronic
health conditions in adulthood (2017). However, evidence from these ACE tests has not yet been
implemented in the field of nursing, which might have positive outcomes in the health of
children. Using the ACE screen test may also assist nursing practitioners in determining certain
environmental conditions that might encourage the occurrence of child abuse. As a result, a
practitioner may detect such scenarios and implement preventive measures that will protect the
child from future harm. In critical appraisal research, specific gaps that exist in the literature
regarding the use of ACES screening tests were reduced, increasing the reliability and validity of
its use in the future. Expanding ACEs screening in pediatric testing centers will enable the
medical practitioner to have a direct influence on the health outcomes of the patients by
interceding in their surroundings.
