Abstract
Background: Pressure ulcers affect areas with protruding bones caused by pressure and
friction. There is a high prevalence of pressure sores as they affect approximately 15% of the
population. Among the discoveries of the wound treatment include negative wound pressure
therapy and conventional wound dressings.
Purpose: To assess whether negative pressure wound therapy is more effective than the
conventional wound dressings in the treatment of pressure sores.
Methods: This is a literature review study conducted on four selected articles. The wound
size, granulation tissue, wound bed scores, and time taken for wound closure are assessed in
all the articles.
Results: The studies show that negative pressure wound therapy effectively treats pressure
sores compared to conventional wound dressing. It reduces the wound size and increases
wound score. It also improves the appearance of the granulation tissue.
Conclusion: Negative wound pressure therapy is an effective method for treating pressure
sores compared to conventional wound dressings.
Keywords: Negative pressure wound therapy, conventional wound dressing, pressure sores,
pressure ulcers, and wound bed score
