Motivational work starts with listening and observing
Listening is particularly important at the early stages of working
with someone.
Few people are truly good listeners.
Everyone can work on becoming a better listener.
Basic concepts
1) Body language
S - Squarely face person
O -Open posture vs crossed arms and legs
L - Lean a little toward the person vs settling back in your chair
E - Eye contact vs staring off into deep space
R - Relax, keep it natural vs sitting like a board
F Friendly vs neutral or scowling
2) Closed versus open questions
Closed: Are you OK?
Open: How are you?
Closed: Have you got any money problems?
Open: What money problems do you have, if any?
Closed: Have you had any difficulties with relationships?
Open: Tell me about the people who matter most to you.
Closed: Have you any particular needs that are not being met?
Open: What needs have you got that are not being met?
