Reflective Paper on Practicum Experience
Application of classwork into practice is one of the necessary strategies in becoming a
qualified nursing officer. According to Sun et al. (2016), an individual must assimilate and assess
the scope in which the theories operate during the practicum experience. Both Jean Watson's
theory of human care and the humanistic approach to counseling are the theories I had prepared
for the practicum experience. The essay seeks to assess the practicum experience based on the
association with patients in the real environment, how I applied the theories during practice, and
how they helped achieve the set goals.
I discovered that Watson's theory and the humanistic counseling method are the best for
handling patients with mental disorders. In a research done by Pajnkihar et al. (2017), they found
out that the ten factors in Watson's theory offer the best foundation for providing health care to
patients with mental illness. The features laid out in theory, including establishing a healthy
relationship, having trust, acceptance of both negative and positive feelings, played a significant
role in executing counseling to the patient. Watson also identified that caring is the best nursing
ideal to ensure safety, improvement, and maintaining human integrity. Pajnkihar et al. (2017)
further explain that nurses require creativity, scientific knowledge, and healthcare skills. Nursing
study plays a vital role in obtaining and improving caring features, which the students should
emphasize throughout the nursing career life. Watson's theory also enlightened me that nurses'

non-caring results and discontentment from the patient may occur.
The humanistic approach to offering individual-based care entails awareness that the
patient's healing begins by themselves. Therefore, the nurse must assist the patient by creating a
conducive environment and encouraging the patient to stimulate the healing process. Pajnkihar et
