The book is all about how to make a leader. Daniel Goleman is the founder or brought
about the idea of “emotional intelligence.” After reading on the reawakening my passion for
work I came to realize that I have a passion. My passion is once to be a great leader like the
book tells us. A great leader must have some of the main qualities great leaders have. To be
passionate about something is to have a great attraction towards something or someone. My
passion to be a great leader comes in hand with some three main paths which I must follow or
might have followed to make that great leader I aspire to be. I’ll discuss them bellow briefly.
As I mentioned above, I have a passion of once being a great leader and as a great
leader there’s some three ways I have to discuss which will lead to this passion coming to life.
First I have to be aware of myself which is known as self awareness. It means having a deep
understanding of one’s emotions, strengths, weaknesses, needs and drives. People with such
qualities are neither over critical nor unrealistic with themselves and with their subjects in case
of a leader. They always know how their emotions or feelings affect them or the people
surrounding them. If for example a certain manager in a certain big organization knows that
tight deadlines bring out the worse in his/her plans the, he or she must work with his clients
and the time present to be able to avoid delays and bring out the best work which will be done
in advance.
Moreover, self awareness extends to one understanding his or her own value and goals. He
or she knows where he is headed and why; for example if a manager gets a job offer which
threatens the financial status of his or her company.
A person who lacks self awareness will opt to make certain decisions which might lead to
inner turmoil or bad consequences. This is due to the lack of self awareness in the leader or as
an individual. As a person who aspires to be a leader self awareness proves to be a major
quality that one must have to make the best leader out of ourselves.
Another quality which i must have to make a good leader is the quality of being a good
motivator. All effective leaders have the quality of being good motivators. The key point about
being a motivator is to achieve. Some mare leaders are driven by the external factors, such as
big salaries or the status that comes from having an impressive title or being part of a big
company. People who are driven to achieve have the passion for the work itself. I must seek out
creative challenges, love to learn, and take great pride in a job well done. They must be
persistent in all their queries and why some things are done and not others.
If for example a manager in a company is frustrated that he/she has to wait for some time for
the goods ordered to be delivered to be paid back by his clients in the field, then tracks down
all his sales persons to know the goods they sold this portrays two very important traits of

people who are driven to achieve. They are forever raising their status bar, and they like to
keep score.
They are forever raising their status bar, and they like to keep score. Interestingly, high
motivators remain optimistic even when everything is against them. They give their subjects
hope in time if crisis. In such cases, self regulation which is another important quality combines
with the achievement motivation to overcome the frustration and the depression which might
be brought about by the crisis or failure. This simple description together with the example
shows us how motivation in leaders is necessary during their leadership periods or term.
Additionally, another great quality that lead to my passion is the idea of being empathetic.
Empathy is the ability to understand the emotional make up of other people, or the skill of
treating people according to their emotional reactions. It is a major dimension in emotional
intelligence. For a leader empathy does not mean adopting other people’s emotions as one’s
own and trying to please everybody. It would make action impossible. Rather, empathy means
thoughtfully considering employees or subjects feelings, along with other factors, in the process
of making intelligent decisions.
Empathy is particularly important today as a component of leadership for at least three main
reasons; first is because of the rapid pace or change of globalization. This is where as a leader
you will meet with individuals of different background an even some from far foreign countries.
These groups of people cannot be treated all the same since they have been brought up or
raised differently. This is where empathy fits in. A good leader will try and reason with all the
people and come up with a nice solution to all their issues.
Secondly another factor is growing need to retain talent. Consider for instance you were a
coach of a certain newly founded international football club, this means you will mingle an
meet new people. This people have their own way of doing things which does not meet with
everyone else in the crowd, therefore, an empathetic coach will be required to lead the team in
order to sustain all the team members.
People wonder how great leaders can make hard decisions if they have feelings for others or
they are “feeling for others” as they say but real great leaders don’t do that. Great leaders with
empathy do more than sympathize with people around them. They use their knowledge to
improve their companies, groups, teams in subtle but important ways.
Also there are some other qualities which make a good leader such as self-regulation which is
controlling or redirecting disruptive emotions and impulses. Leaders who are in control of their
feelings and impulses , that is people who are reasonable , are able to create an environment of
trustworthiness or fairness.
