The standardization in telecommunication industry helps in protecting the electrical,
physical, and procedural features of the communication devices. Standardization improves
interoperability between devices from different manufacturers. The creation of standard
protocol enhances communication between computers from different manufacturers.
Essentially, the standard protocol allows interaction between devices from different
companies without using conversation software. Currently, various organizations have
developed standards to enhance the interoperability of devices from different brands. IEEE
and IETF are some of the organization that develops standardizations in the
telecommunication industry.
IEEE standards have several working groups that look at various aspects of the
telecommunication industry. For example, 802.11 (Wireless LAN) that establishes standards
in the wireless local area network. The standards outlined in the 802.11 Wireless LAN covers
various aspects of WLAN technology (Preeti, Gonzalez-Prelcic, & Heath, 2015). Particularly,
it focuses on the over-the-air interface between a client's wireless device and a base station.
These specifications have been in use by IEEE since 1997 (Preeti, Gonzalez-Prelcic, &
Heath, 2015). The 802.11 specification focuses on WLANs that provides connections at a
speed of between one and two Mbps with a frequency of 2.4 GHz on either direct sequence
spread spectrum (DSSS) or frequency hopping spread spectrum (FHSS) (Preeti, Gonzalez-
Prelcic, & Heath, 2015).
Wireless LAN working group is subdivided into various sections that cover specific
aspects of wireless connections. For example, 802.11a covers WLAN with a speed of up to
54 Mbps and a frequency of 5 GHz. However, it uses orthogonal frequency division
multiplexing encoding scheme instead of FHSS or DSSS. 802.11b covers the WLAN
