Historical and Contemporary Theories of Management
The concept of management has a rich history dating back to as early as the
construction of prehistoric monuments. These constructions were only possible through
effective organization of human capital and planning to achieve the set objectives.
However, the contemporary concept of organizational management dates back to the 18
th
century when business people began investing in inefficient practices. Management
theorists like Frederick Taylor and Henri Fayol were among the people to develop
management theories. This paper looks into various aspects of management theories in
historical and contemporary context.
Scientific and bureaucratic approaches to management- which are one of the
earliest concepts in modern practices, have different principles to effective leadership. In
the scientific approach, the organization focus on improving efficiency in operations at an
individual level (McNamara, 2015). The scientific theory argues that employees get
motivated to work harder when they are assigned a specific task. In essence, the scientific
approach focuses on specialization within the organization where employees handle task
they are most qualified. Labor division originated from this approach as it groups people
performing similar tasks together as postulated by the theory. The management is thus
left with the responsibility of coordinating different departments in the organization and
align their tasks to the set goals. Essentially, the scientific approach to management
focuses on improving efficiency through specialization.
On the other hand, bureaucratic approach to management emphasize on strict
adherence to the organizational structure. Under this approach, employees are under the
absolute control of their managers (McNamara, 2015). Max Weber argued that this
