Writing Center

Writing is very difficult, whether it be for students or people in general. Many people

cannot write without a grammar or spelling mistake especially for 3-4 pages. Also, nobody can

say that writing 3-4 pages without mistakes is easy except a person who has experience with

writing for many years. However, the Oakland University Writing Center has allowed students to

improve their writing in many ways. This convenient serve offers expert staff who can provide

specific assistance.

The Writing Center is located at 212 Kresge Library in the corner of the building. For

students new to campus, Kresge Library is located between the Science Engineering Building

and the Oakland center. It is also close to the clock tower. The Writing Center office is open

Mondays through Thursdays from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

and on Sundays from 3:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. (“the writing center). Students who want to make an

appointment can make it in person during office hours or on-line at

http://wwwp.oakland.edu/ouwc. Also, students should register in the system before they make

appointments. Moreover, there are more than four tables in the Writing Center, but each one can

only seat two people. Therefore, the Writing Center does not take a big space in the Kresge

Library.

The Writing Center is a free service that benefits Oakland University students in many

ways. The staff in the Writing Center are professionals or have enough experience with writing

to fix other students writing. Thus, students can improve their writing appropriately. During an

interview with Adrian Schirr she said that approximately 22 tutors work for the Oakland

University Writing Center. Their majors range from writing and rhetoric and English to pre-law

and education. They receives training online. Each tutor must complete several hours on the

computer before observing and co-tutoring sessions alongside experienced consultants (schirr).

Before becoming a tutor the staff must fill out an application, submit a writing sample, and

interview in the center. They must demonstrate strong people skills and should be informed

writers with strong backgrounds in the field.

Before the Writing Center allows one to make an appointment, they determine your

weakness based on your writing to make it up. The Writing Center assists any kind of writing

courses except ESL writing. Some writing intensive courses that may come as a surprise are

Biology, Research Method, and Statistics. In fact, most of the Writing Center staff are students

and that is good for the students who need assistance. The majority of the tutors can understand

the situation of the student. Being students, the tutor can more clearly explain how to approach

writing assignments because they have gone through the same straggles.

But, how does the Writing Center actually work? As mentioned earlier, the students

should make appointments, whether on-line or in person during office hours. Then, students

should determine what kind of help they need. Also, they can make appointments with any

person they like. With each new appointment students make, they should seek specific

assistance. After that, tutors of the Writing Center will come to the students and help them with

their writing for 45 minutes. They may give the students more time about 10 more minutes. The
