CRIMINAL ETHICAL ISSUES 2
Criminal justice ethical issues and practices
Ethics play essential and crucial roles in criminal justice platform. However, unethical actions
vary diversely from one circumstance to another even though the performance of criminal justice is
greatly affected by several aspects as deception, abuse of power, racial inequity as well as ill-advised
loyalties. Therefore, an ethical law enforcement practitioner refers to someone who embraces values
that portray teachings and conducts that are reliable and dependable and are likely to guard his or her
interaction with the wrong doers thus influencing his or her judgment procedures as per stipulated in
the law. In the other hand, unethical law enforcement officer is one who presents actions that are
outside the standards of law enforcement guidelines rendering his or her action undependable and
doubtful (National Institute of Justice, 2005).
A good law enforcement officer is recognized by his or her actions that are in the stipulated
guidelines of the law enforcement policy. However, since ignorance to law is not a defense, in any
situation he or she engages in the bad act, the procedures turns to be unreliable and becomes
undepended upon, and therefore the practitioner becomes unethical (National Institute of Justice,
2005).
In leadership context, ethics as well as morality are viewed as indistinguishable. However, they
are looked at differently as per the cultural norms and religious values. Ethics in leadership is defined in
diverse concepts as follows; situation ethics where ethics is viewed as what is right as what a situation
prevails. Also, cultural ethics is what a culture view as right and no one has the power to judge the
morals that belong to other culture if not for his or her own. Leadership ethics can also be individual
value-based since everybody has his own set values he lives by. In the other hand, an ethic system in
criminal justice refers to doing what is deemed right in accordance with the law enforcement guidelines.
irrespective of the cultural, religious and professional differences among people (E, Turvey, & Crowder,
2013).
