Provide an overview of the Taco Bell case
Carlos Fontana, a current franchise owner of three Taco Bells’ and, is looking to expand
to a fourth location. When looking to open an additional location, he will need to staff the
restaurant as well as train the staff.
Identify the key issues involved
One issue that Carlos is going to face is finding the right people to hire, as well as
retaining them. We are in a candidate’s market; this means that unemployment rates are low, and
its harder to involve talented professionals for new job opportunities. According to the New
York Times, “In 2000, about 45 percent of those between 16 and 19 had a job today it’s 30
percent.” (Abrams, Gebeloff;2018). These numbers show that fewer teenagers have jobs, and the
fast food industry is known for primary hiring teenagers.
The proximity of locations can be another issue that Carlos could face. “Many, but not
all, franchises grant an "exclusive territory" to their franchisees as part of the rights given under
the franchise agreement contract.” (Elgin,2011) Meaning they are given an agreement that lists
their territory so other franchisers can’t expand into their area and vis versa; so, he needs to look
into geographical locations to make sure he’s not violating any agreements. Opening another
location is too costly in both time and money to risk undertaking this move based on a gut
feeling.
Carlos needs to make sure that the cash flow from the other locations can adequately
support the expansion of the new site. Just because the first locations are turning a profit does not
