What are the important interpersonal and HR-related business considerations when
conducting a performance appraisal with a top performer?
Some key interpersonal skills to review with a top performer during a performance
appraisal are communication, problem-solving, understanding, and teamwork. The
reason that these are important subjects to cover is because as a top performer,
they are already strong in their technical skills and job knowledge so it is important to
develop them in areas that they do not already display strength. This will help the
individual improve their skills and can help to retain an employee with an excellent
performance history, as still feeling challenged and developed in their position. One
reason for high turnover is that an employee feels that they have reached their peak
within their position and there in not a position available to advance into. Most
importantly, employees want to know that what they do matters.
How would you conduct a performance appraisal with a highly emotional employee whose
performance has been declining? Why?
This is a tough situation. I think it would be important to understand what the employee may need
assistance with, especially if their performance in the past was good. I find that generally, when
people are overly emotional and there is a noticeable difference in their job performance, it
generally is troubles within their personal life that begins to seep into their work life. If this is the
case, I would gather information to provide this employee to get them help in areas of their life that
they may be struggling with, like an Employee Assistance Program.
Why is performance management an important aspect of competitive organizations?
Performance management is important because it helps not only supervisors and
HR to track employee performance, but it encourages employees to give more, work
harder, meet deadlines, be creative, etc., if it means that their work is not only
appreciated, but reflected in the pay increases as well. Also, a little bit of competition
is good and helps challenge employees to be there best and strive for more within
the company.
