financed to enhancing efficiency. The healthcare cost can be reduced long term by making the
patient more involved and also making sure that the information typed in the system is correct.
Deficiencies in clinical use of technology
Now that there are new technologies, and the healthcare industry is changing rapidly, there needs
to be proper training with the new equipment and systems. Things that can happen such as
information getting in the wrong hands, typing errors, such as wrong codes, wrong information,

Technology and medical errors
Medical errors have become an increasing public concern among policy-makers, healthcare
providers and experts. Medical errors in the U.S. hospitals and healthcare institutions are the
third leading cause of death and almost 98,000 people annually lose their lives in this way.
According to healthcare and health industry leaders, using information technology enhances
patient safety by preventing medical errors, assessment errors and surveillance system with rapid
response and reduces the risk of harm created after the fact. (Allard J, Carthey J, Cope J, Pitt M,
Woodward S. Medication errors: Causes, prevention and reduction. Br J Haematol
2002;116:255-65.)

Hospitals in concentrated markets charge significantly higher prices and earn significantly higher
margins from private insurers than do hospitals in competitive markets. Hospital prices for
patients in concentrated markets were higher than hospital prices for otherwise-comparable
patients in competitive markets by 25.1% for coronary angioplasty, 13.0%for cardiac rhythm
management (CRM) device insertion, 19.2% for total knee replacement, 24.1%for total hip
replacement, 19.3% for lumbar spine fusion, and 22.7% for cervical spine fusion. Contribution
