Introduction
An action plan is the last phase of a series of activities that form part of a management
planning exercise. It is the initiative made to concertize an organization’s vision into an
actionable outcome. Further, it is a framework that the enterprise uses to apply strategies in
formulating and implementation of objectives. It comes in the backdrop of a sequence of
procedures that include development of a comprehensive mission statement that highlights the
company’s perspective (Secretariat, 2015). The same also involves a detailed interrogation of the
SWOT analysis of the company, alongside an environmental scan of the same. Finally, the
procedures include an analysis of the company’s long term and short term objectives that inform
the decisions of the management.
Steps and associated time frames
As mentioned above, an action plan is comprised of a flurry of steps, stages and phases
that must be utilized in the achievement of long term objectives that inform the vision of the
institution. The steps are summarized below, laying emphasis on the vital aspects of the steps
and the importance of the same in enabling the formulation, implementation, monitoring and
appraisal of the ultimate strategic action plan.
Step one; determine position
The maiden step in the development of a strategic plan is the identification of the
business position of the institution. The same involves the identification of the strategic issues to
be addressed by the proposed strategy, followed by an evaluation of the market situation in terms
of opportunities and threats. In addition to the foregoing, the stage also involves a detailed
