Power and conflict

In the modern societies, there are multiple situations in which conflicts of monumental

proportions arose between the law enforcement authorities and the society. It is one of the

examples of the relationship that exists between power and conflict. While power is a tool that is

suitable for the enforcement of law and order in communities, the same power is capable of

giving rise to clashes if it is used in a manner that is contrary to the expectation of the members

of a community. In that vein, this paper examines the relationship that exists between power and

conflict with particular reference to the dispute between the law enforcement and the

communities.

The factors that contribute to the conflict between the law enforcement and the

communities

In America, there have been a lot of cases in which the law enforcement agencies such as

the police force have been engaged in bitter confrontations with members of the public. One of

the causes of conflicts between the law enforcement institutions and the communities is the

misuse of power. In the country, and indeed in most democracies in the world, the primary

responsibility of the law enforcement agencies is to provide peace through the execution of law

and order. In the process of executing the mandate, some rules and regulations regulate the

manner in which the officers handle them in carrying out the responsibilities (Skolnick, 2011).

However, it is apparent that some officers blatantly disregard the law in the conduct of their

duties. If a police officer shoots and kills an unarmed suspect, it is likely to cause a major

conflict between the law enforcement and the communities.

Another cause of conflict between the members of the communities and the law

enforcement agencies is the exclusion of the people in the making of decisions that directly
