Professional Ethics
Introduction
The term professional ethics refers to those set of rules and regulations that govern both
the personal and corporate actions of individuals. Within every profession, there are unique
standards and regulations that people are expected to abide by for the advancement of the
profession. It is important to note that just like in any other well-ordered society, it is incredibly
necessary to make sure that there are mechanisms that are put in place to promote order. The
American Bar Association is one of the institutions that are tasked with the mandate of making
sure that there is a smooth running of the country's judicial system. In that regard, it has come up
with a set of rules and regulations, or professional ethical standards that regulate the conduct of
the various attorneys in the country. The following reflective essay analyzes the American Bar
Associations rules of professional ethics and their applicability.
The American Bar Association's code of ethics
The American Bar Association originally had 32 canons of professional ethics. These
were rules, regulations, and directions that sought to streamline the manner in which judicial
officers carried out their activities. The primary interest of these ethical standards was to promote
the dignity and respect of the profession while at the same time also protecting all the parties
system. When these rules were being implemented, it became apparent that there were a lot of
issues with the conduct of the professionals such as fraud and dishonesty. All these brought
disrepute to the noble profession. To promote predictability, it became necessary to make sure
that all the judicial officers work in line with some codes of ethical standards.
The first cannon, a principle which also forms the center of the whole system, is that
lawyers should always act in a manner that helps to promote and maintain the integrity and
