II. Learning Objectives
A. After completion of our 36-week map skills unit, students will be able to create
and label specific physical characteristics (5 rivers, 3 mountain ranges and 2
oceans) on a map of the United States with 85% accuracy.
B. After completion of our 36-week map skills unit, students will be able to create
geographic tools (map key and Compass Rose) on a map of the United States with
85% accuracy.
III. Description of unit before project
A. In our 36-week unit, students are introduced to what a map is and the basic things
almost all maps have (title, map key, and compass rose). Students learn the eight
directions on a compass rose and that a map key has symbols found on a map that
stands for real items. Students work with one map a week and learn how to read
the map and answer two questions every day about the specific map we are
working on. We discussed why it is important to be able to read a map. The maps
start simple with a bedroom and get harder as the unit continues. Students learn
about different states in the United States and the oceans and continents around
the world.
IV. Rational for this assignment
A. This project will let students demonstrate their understanding of basic geography
tools and identify and label physical features on a map. The basic skills that are
being assessed in this project have been reinforced for 36 weeks and will allow

the teacher to see if students do understand the basic concepts of map
labeling/reading.
V. Student-friendly directions
A. Day 1
1. Students will get a handout that explains the project and what is expected
of them.
a) Student Handout
2. Students will get the blank piece of paper they need to create their map
and will be prompted to put their names on the back.
3. We will discuss what is expected of them for this project.
4. The teacher will answer any questions
B. Day 2
1. Students will work in pairs of two to draw/copy an outline of the United
States on their blank piece of paper
2. Independently, students will give their map a title
3. Students will but their name on the back of their project (if not already
done)
C. Day 3
1. Students will finish drawing/copying an outline of the United States on
their paper.
2. Students will create the map key and choose the symbols that will be used
3. Students will design a Compass Rose and label it with the 8 directions (N,
S, E, W, NE, NW, SE, SW)
D. Day 4
1. Students will have a visual on the interactive white board in the front of
the room to see where the mountain ranges, rivers and oceans are located.
2. Students will use their pre-chosen symbols to indicate where the
mountains rivers are located on the map of the United States
