THE TRUE IMPORTANCE OF GOOD SPELLING 2
The True Importance of Good Spelling
“The true importance of good spelling” by Lennox Morrison focuses on the necessity of
appropriate typing to increase the credibility of communication. With the advancement in
technology and growing pressure for quick responses via email, typing errors in written
communication or insertion of inappropriate words are very likely. Spelling mistakes should not
be taken lightly because they can be harmful and are not in any way funny. Even though a typo
does not make individuals look less intelligent, it can result in confusion and loss of clarity. In
business, extreme typo cases can result in missed opportunities for employment or sales. Typing
errors even have the potential of destroying relationships with customers or potential love
partners.
Most employers look for employees with a certain level of proficiency. It is for this
reason that some companies ask candidates to undergo writing tests. Coming out of institutions
of higher education does not guarantee that individuals will have the right communication and
interpersonal skills that will enable them to acquire a job. The dissatisfaction of employers with
literacy standards and use of English among graduates accounts for missed opportunities for
many individuals.
Technology is contributing to increased cases of bad spelling, making abbreviations and
misspelt words more common in almost every written communication. Tools for spell-checking
are not always the answer to solving typo errors but may create new problems. Spelling is the
most common type of mistakes that individuals ranging from students to leaders make. Wrong
words are likely to be common as different words other than the intended ones can go unnoticed
during writing and proof-reading.
