PART 1
1. Why is Geography important in the study of History?
Geography and History are complementary subjects that are key in the understanding of each
other. History cannot be understood properly without proper knowledge on the context in
which it took place. Geography is therefore important as it can sometimes explain historical
events better. This makes them better understood with the context within which it puts them.
This is because it is almost practically impossible to understand the present and the present
without geography and the present can also not be understood without geography.
2. Think of two historical events in American history (can be from any time
period), other than those presented in the video lecture, where geography was
important in understanding the event. Be sure to explain why each location was
important to each event.
The Battle of Bunker Hill as portrayed in John Trumbull’s is an historical event where
geography was very important in its understanding. The battle took place on Breed’s Hill. Both
hills are drumlins-oval-shaped, steep-sided and smooth-topped glacial deposits. This location
was strategic as it aided those in the war to better position and strategize themselves in the war
(Russell, 2011).
Another historical event which is rich in showing the contribution of Geography to History is
the construction of the Erie Canal. The builders took advantage of the best natural pass through
the Appalachian to connect the Atlantic Ocean with the Great Lakes. This route was chosen as
opposed to the shortest possible route because of its significance in creating the largest trade
area in North America (Russell, 2011).

PART 2
1. Define “Primary Source” IN YOUR OWN WORDS and give an example of a
type of primary source document that you might find concerning the
American Revolution.
A primary source is a document written during the time under study. It gives first-hand
information as it records events as they occur. One such primary source document concerning
the American Revolution is the Declaration of Independence. This document recorded the
original statement by the people on their right to have a choice in their own government. The
document was produced on July 4, 1776.
2. Define “Secondary Source” IN YOUR OWN WORDS and provide an example
of a type of secondary source document you might find about the World War
II.
A secondary source is any material, written or otherwise, that is produced after the event after
the study has taken place. It usually contains second hand information and refers mostly to the
primary source. An example of a secondary source is the book titled “Women Air force Pilots
of World War II.” The book was authored by Vera Williams in 1994 and published by
Motorbooks International in the same year. This was after the war which took place from 1939
to 1945. The book focused on the women in the war.
3. Define historical "evidence" IN YOUR OWN WORDS.
Historical evidence is any material that helps us to understand past events. They are drawn
from both primary and secondary sources and they help in cementing a historical fact in an
argument. Historical evidence is usually required to support a historical fact and usually
includes the source, the year and the location within which the event in question took place.
This aids in making the facts of the matter clear.
