My Festival Recollection
It is no secret that Chinese literature is one that holds a lot of richness and has grown
immensely for thousands of years. The growth is strikingly depicted in the contrast between
modern Chinese literature and the traditional Chinese literature. Many have translated the change
to the different forms of governance wherein initially, the Chinese were ruled by an emperor a
period wherein classical literature was predominant, which existed up to 1912 and the period
which followed where modern literature took precedence with the ancient forms of classical
literature being ignored (Idema and Haft).
Well, I am a great lover of Chinese literature and I got an opportunity to experience it
first hand in one of their annual festivals. On that particular morning I dawned on my
Zhongshan suit to blend in the impending experience. Having already had a background check
on the culture I could already the proponents of classical literature and modern literature. I could
already spot different clothing ranging from Hanfu, Cheongsam, and Tang suit (Idema and
Haft). The festival was set to represent an empire in direct relation to the known Chinese empire
that existed before modern day china came to life.
As the different festival attendees continue to mill around the different stalls showing the
varied literary aspects, I find myself in a section named the “Jing”. An old Chinese man was in

charge at that particular stall tearing down the key elements of the “Jing”. The man says that the
name is just in reference to renowned 13 ancient texts. Of these, five owe allegiance to famous
Chinese philosopher Confucius. These are spring and autumn annals, book of rites, book of
songs, book of changes, and book of documents. Confucius is however a Latinized form of the
Chinese name K’ung fu-tzu. The man, who I come to know is called Tao Zin, vividly describes
the origin of Confucius and even presents us with pictorial illustrations of the dragons and the
state where the philosopher was born. Well, Confucius is the father of Confucianism which is
learning substance, a code socially, and reference for social values. Additionally, the Analects
are attributed to the philosopher as Tao explains giving a brief of what the notes and writings
have (Idema and Haft).
Next I find myself at a stall where a man seems to be lashing out at modern Chinese
literature. The man speaks passionately about the “Shi”, which I come to learn refers to the
different writings which hold some sort of historical significance. These include records, songs,
poems, and articles mostly used to send messages and entertain the emperor and empress.
Vividly, he passionately talks about Li Bai and Du Fu who are believed to have propelled
traditional Chinese poetry to levels never reached. This is the period referred to Golden Age of
Chinese Poetry. The “Three Wonders” expression is also explained by the man to refer to this
poetry, Zhang Xu’s calligraphy, and Pei Mini’s swordplay. It is actually very interesting how the
three different literary skills are referred to as wonders, being a depiction of the value
apportioned to them.
Through and through, I also got to learn of the “Zi”. This includes Taoism. Buddhism,
and Confucianism. These elements mainly focus on the culture and religious beliefs upheld by
the people in the classical times. Reference is made to the Taoists belief in good life and the
