Depressing things You’ve been raised by a single parent all through your life and he or
she is the only father figure or mother figure you’ve known your entire life. When you get to lose
them it is an awful experience despite knowing that death is actually an inevitable experience.
It’s extremely depressing when you find your lover in the arms of another person. In that
moment you start reflecting on the happy moments and the struggles you have gone through
together. You question your choices as to why you have invested so much in a stranger such that
their actions make you feel in a certain way. You end up crying and you can’t seem to forgive
yourself or your lover. A period of dilemma and depression follows as you try to decide on how
or even if it is still worth it to stay in the relationship or move on.
Then there is a moment that arises when you write a poem to someone- perhaps for their
birthday, a wedding, or just in appreciation- and they fail to acknowledge it and all you get is
backlash. They end up ridiculing why your poem follows the classical literature instead of
writing something more modern that is in connection to the modern times. Worse off, they end
up tearing your poem as you watch just to reinforce their dissatisfaction and show you just how
valueless the poem is to them.

Managing to lay your hands on some “Jing” and then losing the texts without having read
them.
When you are explaining your culture to a group of friends and delve deep into things
like Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism and instead of them listening and embracing
diversity, they end up rebuking your culture and saying just how backward it is. I haven’t had
this experience yet but I can only imagine how depressing it could be.
Failing to achieve a goal you have set for yourself and its long term effect ends up
affecting those close to you.
You’ve not managed to provide the basic needs to your family and yet you are the man of
the house. Worse off you are late on your mortgage payments and you cannot even raise the
required amount to relocate to a cheaper house. Around the same time you lose your job and the
friends you’ve depended on all your life desert you and no longer want to be associated with you.
I was sharing with some relatives in the presence of my mum- or it was something one of
my cousins said- and I commented, ‘Many at times I feel lost and desire to get to know who my
father actually is. In as much as I feel so much pain and desire vengeance or even death upon
him, I want him to look at me in the face and tell me what I actually lack and why he had to
disappear without a trace. I’m just overwhelmed by his lack of communication, not a single letter
or even text message not even a call or an email.’
I notice my mum is watching and listening from the kitchen and she cannot hold back her
tears and when she notices I am staring at her she disappears from my view. My other relatives
who were present just stare in silence not knowing what to say or even how to console me.
Later that day I found a note on my bedside and I could tell it was mum’s reply:
