Citizens United vs. FEC
The First Amendment is a bill of rights in the US that enhances free speech, freedom of
assembly, and religious opportunity. The question as to whether this bill should protect the
political expression of corporates has stirred controversy. However, the First Amendment should
not protect corporate political expression. Corporations are not citizens, and neither are they,
humans. Therefore, their inventors are not endowed to them specific inalienable rights.
Additionally, there is no valid reason why their claims to autonomy should be respected (Coates,
2012). Corporations do not represent everyone's ideas and interests under it, especially
politically, wherein people hold varied views. Therefore, a corporation might be used to
propagate the interests of a select few under the umbrella of the whole corporation as
corporations do not speak for all its participants.
Drawing the line for corporations between freedom and restrictions is somewhat tricky.
However, corporates should only be allowed to speak through political action committees to
ensure that the view they represent is for everyone under it. Additionally, corporate bodies
should not be allowed to air adverts with a certain level of political inclination as these adverts
impact voters who ideally should be independent. Data shows that corporations spend highly on
political campaigns, hoping that their main objective will be realized in the long run, and
therefore they are not for the people but instead for themselves (Cillizza, 2014).
In light of the Citizens United decision, I would be in a dilemma as I do not share in its
sentiments. However, given the opportunity to advance my corporation's profit maximization
agenda, I would seek politicians who support the vision and mission of my corporation and form
pacts with them. I would seek to get as many of such politicians as possible and brand them as
representatives of the corporation as they advance their campaigns.
