COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY 2
COGNITIVE PSYCHOLOGY
Cognitive psychology is concerned with the way people think. Its three antecedents are
structuralism, functionalism, and behaviorism. Structuralism sought to establish how perception
elements configure to constitute more complex perceptions. The functionalists argued that this
approach was far too narrow to give a comprehensive understanding of thought (Gans, 2019).
Their approach focused more on the human mind functioning more specifically on what and why
people do certain things. The approach was more inclined towards things that could be observed
and ideas that could be expressed as opposed to the mind's structural components. The
Behaviorism approach, on the other hand, is based on the belief that one's behavior is a depiction
of what goes on in their mind. The approach sought to disregard the other approaches as it was
objective and disregarded mental processes (Gans, 2019).
I believe that functionalism had the most influence on the development of cognitive theory.
This is because the approach emphasizes the determination of reasons for people’s behavior. This
is a depiction of the unique cognitive patterns of thought upon which cognitive psychology is
inclined.
Skinner's work was rooted in the view that that classical conditioning was far too simplistic
to be a complete explanation of complex human behavior. He believed that the best way to
understand behavior is to look at the causes of an action and its consequences (McLeod, 2018). He
called this approach operant conditioning. I agree with these views as they fully outline the cause
and effect of our action as we are likely to repeat an act that has pleasant consequences as opposed
to one that results in unpleasant consequences. For instance, if when you were younger, you tended
to climb trees and the consequence was that you hang out with those friends you wanted, you
would get positive reinforcement and thus have a tendency to continue climbing trees. However,
