Introduction
The complex need is a phenomenon that many have not been able to properly define.
This is because the nature of the needs are unique to an individual and their preexisting
conditions such that what might seem to be a complex need to one may be a different thing to
another. Nonetheless, complex needs are often viewed from the multiple unmet needs
perspective such that one is considered a complex needs client if he or she has several needs that
interlock and span across both health and social issues (Adebowale & Burrowes, 2007, p. 2). Into
the bargain, these needs can also relate to physical as well as financial wellbeing and their
interaction can generate a range of simultaneous problems to the affected party. Therefore, a
complex needs client will often exhibit a co-morbidity of but not limited to mental health issues,
substance misuse issues, physical health conditions, learning disability, offending behaviour,
employment problems, housing issues or homelessness, relationship difficulties, domestic
violence, social isolation, poverty, and trauma either physical, psychological, or social.
Moreover, these needs continue to create a divide which is more likely to increase with age and
the needs themselves with the severity, diagnosis difficulty and treatment, and long-standing
nature still present (Adebowale & Burrowes, 2007, p. 2). With such a high risk of the
vulnerability of hitting crisis points in their lives these individuals require a coordinated effort
from more than one agency or service to attain the required support and thus these individual
require personalized experience in the response from services to meet their complex needs
(Adebowale & Burrowes, 2007, p. 2). Therefore, in this paper, I will focus on the complex
mental health needs of prisoners.
